8/30  THE BUCHANAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WILL HOST THEIR FIFTH SATURDAY SINGING AND POTLUCK STARTING AT 5PM ON SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE CHURCH ON HIGHWAY 140 EAST IN BUCHANAN.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ATTEND.

8/31  FOOTBALL SEASON PASSES FOR THE 2014 OBION COUNTY CENTRAL REBELS ARE NOW ON SALE IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE DURING NORMAL SCHOOL HOURS.  THE COST IS $25 AND FEATURES FIVE HOME GAMES AGAINST MEMPHIS FRAYSER, DRESDEN, SOUTH GIBSON, CALLOWAY COUNTY AND CROCKETT COUNTY.

8/31  HERE’S A COUPLE OF GREAT IDEAS FOR SUMMER FUN FROM THE PARIS LANDING GOLF COURSE.   “TWILIGHT RATES ARE NOW IN EFFECT.   PLAY FOR $28 AFTER 1PM EVERY DAY.   PARIS LANDING ALSO HAS A “GROWING THE GAME” SPECIAL NOW THROUGH AUGUST 31ST.   JUNIORS 17 AND UNDER PLAY FREE WITH PAYING PARENT OR GUARDIAN AFTER 1PM SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.  ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL PARIS LANDING GOLF COURSE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE SPECIALS THIS SUMMER.

8/31  FORMER RESIDENTS FROM THE STEWART COUNTY PORTION OF LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES WILL HAVE THEIR ANNUAL HOMECOMING ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 31ST AT THE BISON RANGE AREA.  ALL THOSE ATTENDING SHOULD BRING FOOD, BEVERAGES AND CHAIRS.  RESTROOMS, PICNIC TABLES AND GRILLS WILL BE PROVIDED.

8/31  THE OBION COUNTY CORN-FEST IS BRINGING BACK THE CORN-FEST PARADE.  THIS YEAR’S PARADE WILL BE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH STARTING AT 5:30PM IN DOWNTOWN UNION CITY.  ALL BEAUTY QUEENS, CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, SPORTS TEAMS, CHURCHES, DIGNITARIES AND BUSINESSES ARE INVITED TO BE A PART OF THE FUN.  THERE WILL BE A CASH PRIZE FOR THE BEST FLOAT, BEST DECORATED CAR/TRUCK AND BEST DECORATED TRACTOR/ATV.  IT IS FREE TO ENTER, SO GET YOUR PARADE APPLICATION JUST BY GOING TO OBIONCOUNTYCORNFEST.COM.

8/31  THE HOMEPLACE TRADES FAIR WILL ONCE AGAIN TAKE PLACE DURING LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES NATIONAL RECREATION AREA.  THE FAIR WILL BE SATURDAY, AUGUST 30TH AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 31ST FROM 10AM-4PM EACH DAY.  THERE WILL BE HOMEMADE BREADS AND BAKED GOODS, A 5TH GENERATION MASTER CHAIR MAKER, HAND-CARVED MANDOLINS AND MUCH MORE.  REGULAR ADMISSION TO THE HOMEPLACE IS $5 FOR AGES 13 AND OLDER, $3 FOR AGES 5-12 AND FREE FOR AGES 4 AND UNDER.

9/1  THERE WILL BE A 5K AND 1 MILE FUN RUN ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST AT SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH IN UNION CITY.  REGISTRATION STARTS AT 7AM WITH THE RACE TO FOLLOW AT 8AM.  THE COST TO ENTER IS $20.  THERE WILL AWARDS FOR 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD PLACES IN ALL AGE GROUPS AND BEST OVERALL MALE & FEMALE.  PROCEEDS FROM THE RACE WILL BENEFIT ST. JUDE’S CHILDRENS RESEARCH HOSPITAL.

9/1  LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES WILL HOST NATURE’S MOST EXTREME WEEKEND AT THE NATURE STATION, SATURDAY, AUGUST 30TH THROUGH MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST.  THEY’LL HAVE CANOE TRIPS, A TURTLE TALLADEGA RACE, SCAVENGER HUNTS, EXTREME ANIMAL CLOSE-UPS AND MORE.  TO FIND OUT MORE, CALL 270-924-2016.

9/4  EXCHANGE STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST WILL HOST THE “SOUL FOOD CAFÉ” ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH FROM 5:30PM-7PM.  THEY’LL SERVE UP HAMBURGERS, HOT DOGS, FRENCH FRIES AND DESSERTS  AT NO CHARGE TO EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY.  THE SOUL FOOD CAFÉ WILL BE OPEN THE 1ST AND 3RD THURSDAY EVENING OF EVERY MONTH AND WILL BE HOSTED BY A DIFFERENT GROUP EACH TIME.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT MORE, CALL 885-1507.

9/6  SHADY GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WILL HOST THE “SCOOP”-ETITION ICE CREAM EATING CONTEST IN KIWANIS PARK ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH FROM 1PM-3PM.  $4 GETS YOU A SPOON AND ALL THE SCOOPS OF HOMEMADE ICE CREAM YOU CAN EAT.  AGES 4-10 ARE JUST $2 AND KIDS 3 AND UNDER ARE FREE.  THERE WILL BE LIVE MUSIC AND INFLATABLES FOR THE KIDS.  ALL THE PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT REELFOOT RURAL MINISTIRES.

9/6  THE WEST TENNESSEE WRITING PROJECT WILL OFFER A CONFERENCE ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH FROM 8:30AM-2:30PM AT OBION COUNTY CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL IN TROY.  THE WORKSHOP IS OPEN TO ANYONE OVER 18 INTERESTED IN WRITING AND PUBLISHING.  THERE WILL BE SESSIONS WITH SEVERAL PUBLISHED AUTHORS AND BREAKOUT SESSIONS ON VARIOUS TOPICS INCLUDING WRITING, TEACHING, TECHNOLOGY AND THE COMMON CORE.  REGISTRATION IS $30 IF YOU SIGN UP BEFORE SEPTEMBER 4TH; OTHERWISE THE COST IS $40.  TO FIND OUT MORE OR TO GET REGISTERED CALL THE UTM OFFICE OF EXTENDED CAMPUS AND ONLINE STUDIES AT 731-881-7080.

9/6  THE TENNESSEE SOYBEAN FESTIVAL 5K ROAD RACE, WALK AND 1K KIDS RUN WILL BE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH BEHIND WESTVIEW HIGH SCHOOL IN MARTIN.  THE KIDS RUN WILL START AT 7:30AM WITH THE 5K RUN AND WALK FOLLOWING AT 8:15AM.  ENTRY FEE IS $12 IN ADVANCE AND $18 ON RACE DAY.  ENTRY FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT BSN SPORTS AND SIDELINE PHYSICAL THERAPY AND FITNESS CENTER.  TO FIND OUT MORE, CALL 731-587-9572.

9/10  THE CORNFEST  “PRIDE OF OBION COUNTY” LUNCHEON WILL BE WEDESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH STARTING AT NOON AT THE HAMPTON CENTER IN UNION CITY.  THIS EVENT RECOGNIZES AND HONORS OUTSTANDING LOCAL LEADERS FOR THEIR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.  THIS YEAR’S EVENT WILL HONOR UNION CITY WAL-MART MANAGER DAVID HARRIS.  TICKETS ARE $15 EACH AND CAN BE PURCHASED IN ADVANCE AT THE OBION COUNTY PUBLIC LIBARARY.  TICKETS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR.

9/13  THE OBION COUNTY CORNFEST WILL HOST THIS YEAR’S “DAY IN THE PARK” CELEBRATION ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH AT KIWANIS PARK IN DOWNTOWN UNION CITY.  THERE WILL BE EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY INCLUDING A CORN-HOLE TOURNAMENT, CORN-FEST IDOL COMPETITION, PET PARADE AND BED RACES.  TYSON WILL ONCE AGAIN FEED THE COMMUNITY WITH A FREE CHICKEN DINNER STARTING AT 4PM.  THE DAY WILL END WITH A FREE CONCERT FEATURING FORMER AMERICAN IDOL STAND-OUT PAUL JOLLEY.  TO SEE A COMPLETE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS, GO TO OBIONCOUNTYCORNFEST.ORG  

9/13  THE UNION CITY J’CETTE’S ARE SPONSORING A “ZOMBIE RUN 5K” AS A PART OF THIS YEAR’S OBION COUNTY CORNFEST.  THE ONE MILE FUN RUN AND 5K WILL BE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH.  REGISTRATION WILL START AT 8AM AT UNION CITY HIGH SCHOOL WITH THE RACE TO BEGIN AT 9AM.  PRE-REGISTRATION FEE IS $15 AND YOU ARE GUARANTEED A T-SHIRT, OTHERWISE IT WILL BE $20 ON RACE DAY.  YOU CAN PRE-REGISTER AND FIND OUT MORE BY GOING TO OBIONCOUNTYCORNFEST.ORG.   

9/20  MARTIN’S TWRA HUNTER SAFETY COURSE WILL BE AN ONLINE CLASS THIS TIME AROUND.  YOU MUST REGISTER AND TAKE THE COURSE ONLINE IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXAM AND FIELD DAY ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH AT UTM’S BREHM HALL, ROOM 258 STARTING AT 9AM.  TO REGISTER, GO TO TNWILDLIFE.ORG.

9/20  CYCLISTS ARE NEEDED FOR “THE TOUR DE REELFOOT” ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH STARTING AT 8AM.  THE 16 OR 30 MILE EVENT WILL TAKE RIDERS AROUND REELFOOT LAKE AND ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.  PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT REELFOOT RURAL MINISTRIES.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT MORE OR IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET REGISTERED, GO TO REELFOOTBIKERIDE.COM.

9/30  THE PARIS HENRY COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL WILL HOST THE “ROOTS OF RHYTHM” ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH AT THE KRIDER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN PARIS STARTING AT 7PM.  PERFORMED BY THE UTM PERCUSSION GROUP AND THE HCHS MADRIGALS, THIS SHOW WILL TELL THE HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF WHERE OUR MUSICAL HISTORY CAME FROM.  IT’S $5 FOR STUDENTS AND $10 FOR ADULTS.  TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE ARTS COUNCIL OFFICE, FROM ANY COUNCIL MEMBER, LEACHES AND MERISONS.  ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT THE PARIS HENRY COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL.
